The school's approach to the curriculum | We follow a three-year Key Stage 3 curriculum which meets and further develops the demands of the National Curriculum. | |

Curriculum content | Through our delivery of a knowledge-rich, broad and balanced curriculum we ensure every student experiences a smooth transition from Key Stage 2 into Key Stage 3. Whilst we retain a strong focus on core subjects, our comprehensive programme of study also includes Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Humanities, Design and Technology, Expressive Arts, Physical Education and Religious Studies. We have a bespoke Personal Development curriculum which is designed to develop spiritual, moral, social and cultural appreciation. It also teaches children how to keep themselves and others safe through strong themes related to relationships and age appropriate sex education. Furthermore, we place great importance and emphasis on the development of literacy, numeracy, oracy and reading within and across subjects and, in doing so, we provide our students with the confidence, knowledge and skills they will require at Key Stage 4 and beyond. | |

GCSE Qualifications | Level 2/GCSE Qualifications Following the exposure to an extensive knowledge rich key stage three curriculum our students in year 10 and 11 are now fully equipped and able to pursue areas of personal interest and follow a two year programme of study which culminates in end of year exams at the end of the key stage. We provide our students with the opportunity and encouragement to study the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) pathway which consists of English, Maths, Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Humanities and Computing. This offer is complemented by a wide range of optional subjects, such as Computer Science, Spanish, German, French, Geography, History, Business, Health & Social, Art, Resistant Materials, Creative iMedia, Food, Drama, Product Design, Religious Studies and Sport Studies. | |

16-19 Qualifications on offer | Our Key Stage 5 students have the opportunity to follow a tailored programme of study in Years 12 and 13 and can select from a wide range of A-Level and equivalent qualifications. Our Key Stage 5 offer supports students who wish to follow either an academic or vocational pathway as part of their next phase of learning and we are immensely proud of our partnerships with local FE and HE institutions. Consequently, our students go on to employment, apprenticeships and training and/or university; the number of Newark students gaining places at Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities continues to rise each year. |

Equality Objectives | Equality objectives attached. Newark Academy is committed to the promotion of equality of opportunity and places great value on the diversity of its community. The provision of equality of opportunity and respect for the needs and rights of the individual are fundamental to our GREAT values of Newark Academy. Newark Academy fulfils its general and specific duties in relation to equality of opportunity and actively demonstrates due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations between different people when carrying out their activities, in all strands as identified in the Equality Act 2010. How we approach this is outlined below: Equality Objectives - To improve the attendance of all students to at least 96% and continue to keep persistent absence to be below national figures. - To improve the achievement of SEND students and disadvantaged students and to narrow the achievement gap between SEND students and non-SEND students and disadvantaged and advantaged students. - To raise expectations amongst staff and students in order that all students make at least expected progress each year in all core subjects. - To ensure that all young people who are eligible for pupil premium (in receipt of free school meals in the last 6 years or are a child in care) have adequate support so that they attend school regularly and make expected progress that is in line with their peers. - To review and revise the curriculum so that it represents a diverse culture and society and encourages tolerance and respect. - To ensure that images used around school, for example, in lessons, noticeboards, assemblies represent the diverse culture and society we live in. - To improve communication with parents and carers who are marginalised by personal circumstances such as lack of transport, language barriers or low confidence by liaising with them regularly and meeting with them regularly and providing support such as interpreters, as necessary. - To improve attendance at parents' evenings, particularly for those students who are eligible for pupil premium funding, have a special need or disability or for whom English is an additional language. - To ensure that young people who attend Newark Academy have a voice through promotion of the student council and increased opportunities for wider enrichment and leadership and leadership opportunities. |
