World Book Day at Newark Academy

On 2nd March Newark Academy took part in World Book Day in a number of ways. Throughout the day students took part in a variety of activities to celebrate authors, illustrators, books and, most importantly, reading.

The day begun with a quiz on characters from famous novels, including a picture quiz, and lots of discussion on great books and why reading is fun and important.

Our students have also been taking part in a fantastic charity event, Readathon, to raise money to provide storytelling for sick children in hospital. To do this, they have been collecting sponsorship money from family and friends and picked a number of books to read. Everyone has been really getting stuck in!

Alongside all this the school is also running a 50 word story writing competition for a chance to win a Kindle. Closing date for entries is Friday 17th March, so there is still plenty of time to get any entries in to Mrs Horner in the library.

One highlight of the day was the staff character competition; Newark Academy staff all came in as their favourite book character, their costumes were then judged by the student council and prizes awarded. The results were as follows:

1st place - Mr Maxwell as Von Bruning from The Riddle of Sands by Erkine Childers.

2nd place Miss Watkin as Mary Poppins from Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers.

3rd place Mrs Horner as A cow from George Orwell's Animal Farm.

Well done to everyone that took part in World Book Day and good luck to any students participating in the Readathon and story writing competition!
