Newark Academy takes to the stage!

The school returns to the musical stage next month with its own rendition of 'Little Shop of Horrors'.

The show will take place in Newark Academy’s new state of the art theatre on the 7th, 8th and 9th of February and tickets are now on sale. Auditions were held for parts in the well known production with roles available in singing, dancing and acting. Students will also help run the show; Callum in Yr9 is studying Lighting as part of his GCSE Drama studies and will be the Technical Lighting Operator for ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ each night.

Joe Denman, an ex student of the school, has volunteered to come back to help coach the students taking part and also play the role of the flesh and blood eating Plant. Joe took a-level performing arts before going on to study Drama at De Montfort University, Leicester and has enjoyed helping students prepare for the musical. Ex Head of Music, Mr O’Leary has also returned as musical director for the show. Choreographer will be Charlotte Hancock, a post graduate from the University of Lincoln who has been dancing since the age of two and has been helping with school productions for the last few years.

A total of 27 students will take part in the performance which is open to members of the public to come and enjoy. Chloe in year 10 will play Audrey, Wiktor (year 9) is Seymour and Daniel (year 11) plays the part of Mr Mushnik.

Ally Sadler, head of performing arts said:

“‘Little Shop of Horrors’ is, at its core, a sweet love story where a hard done by, normally good guy will do anything to get the girl of his dreams. Stuck in poverty ridden Skidrow, New York, Seymour Krelbourn’s temptation is challenged with the arrival of a huge alien green plant!

“The cast of ‘Little shop of Horrors’ are really looking forward to performing this wacky and wild rock comedy musical which will be our first full musical since our production of ‘Oh! What a Lovely War!’ in 2014.

“The commitment of the performers and the production team has again reminded me that the arts are such a valuable part of our curriculum.”

Make sure you also tune into Radio Newark up until the show to hear a special Newark Academy announcement!

The performance will start at 7pm. Tickets are £5.50 for adults and £3 for children. To secure yours please call school reception: 01636 615000
